Karuna shares her insights on cultivating a winning mindset.

Learn how to train your brain to embrace failure, visualise and set your intentions and aim high.

Passion fuels motivation. When you’re unwavering in the pursuit of your dreams and you focus your energy on living in alignment with your values, success is a natural evolution.

TIP #1
NURTURE YOUR PASSIONS

The hollow goal concept is one I’d like to explore further.
Does it ignite your soul? Do you dream about it? Do you visualise it?
You know it’s a true passion-fuelled goal when it fits this brief.

Be honest with yourself. Is it the notoriety you’re seeking? An ego-fix? If you’re being fuelled by bravado, your cup will never be full. A goal needs to mean enough to you that you’re not going to let yourself down.

Deep-dive into the inner workings of your mind. Focus on your own values and what creates internal happiness. What do you want your life to look like?

Design your career by defining SMART goals of substance. There is nothing particularly revolutionary about SMART goals, but they work.

For years successful and inspiring leaders within their fields have attributed their success to the SMART goal setting process and the clarity they derived from it.

Yet, most of the agents I speak to have a broad, elusive concept of success. They haven’t really analysed what it will take to get there.

Specific;
Measurable;
Achievable;
Realistic; and
Time-bound.

TIP #2
SET GOALS OF SUBSTANCE

Who are you comparing yourself to? Are you an aspiring agent who is comparing his performance to an established agent with decades of experience? Perhaps you’re an individual agent and you’re comparing yourself to an EBU.  It’s great to have big aspirations, but if your goals aren’t realistic, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

Many agents compare themselves to people who they perceive as over-achievers. The problem is, it’s often smoke and mirrors. Many agents project their lives as ever-peachy, healthy and wealthy. It’s often a fraudulent representation.

It’s easy to get caught obsessing over their highlights reel, without realising that it is a projection designed to create a perception, whether truth or fiction. I’ve witnessed the crippling effect of comparison. It’s time we realised that most of what we see is fabricated.

On the other hand, if you’re in an environment that isn’t conducive to success, and you’re comparing yourself to people who aren’t achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself, it’s easy to downgrade your opportunity to excel and justify your behaviour. It’s a dangerous mindset. Instead of leading by example, many agents are impressionable. They become a product of their environment, falling victim to the apathy of their colleagues.

Compare yourself to yourself. Are you getting better every year? Are you benchmarking yourself against your own personal best? Are you tracking your performance, so you can reflect on your strength and weaknesses? Are you constantly evolving? Are you proactive, or reactive, when it comes to your performance? Are you working to your full capacity? Do you really know what you are capable of, when you set your mind to it?

The time is now.

TIP #3
FOCUS ON HITTING YOUR OWN MARKERS
